Things to Consider When Buying Health Insurance

When considering which health insurance to buy, there are many things to consider. Does the scheme have options for hospital cover, how much do you need to pay before the scheme becomes active and whether medication is considered are among the many things that should be looked at when purchasing health insurance.

However, the main factor when looking at health insurance is how much do you pay? Additional options will increase the price, but the main question on most people’s minds when choosing health insurance is simply “How much do I have to pay before you cough up?”

When considering buying health insurance, there are approximately six methods of payment available when considering buying health insurance. The premium (or monthly installment) is what you pay to get covered. The other six are how much you will be paying in the event of a medical need.

1. Deductible – This is the amount needed to be paid out-of-pocket before the insurance will take effect. An example is having a $500 limit before which the scheme will start paying any bills. There could likely be many doctors visits and prescription refills before this figure is reached.

2. Copayment – The amount needed to be paid before the health insurance will kick in with their share of the service. An example is the policy holder having a $45 ceiling price for doctors visits and prescription refills.

3. Coinsurance – Instead of the copayment (a fixed amount upfront), the policy holder could choose to go this route. With coinsurance, the policy-holder pays a certain percentage of the total cost of the services (20%). This can be both good and bad, depending on what needs to be paid. A few doctors’ appointments would generally entail a small amount, whereas long hospitalization would eat away at the bank balance.

4. Exclusions – This type of policy excludes certain services and the policy holder is expected to pay full price of any services that are not included. A policy with this option could turn out to be crippling if hospital bill are not included.

5. Coverage limits – These policies have certain limits set on them, after which the policy-holder is expected to pay all costs. This could include a $1500 limit on prescription drugs, or $10000 on hospital costs. It is good to find out how much certain services costs and by how much they are expected to increase so that you do not short-change yourself when choosing this option.

6. Out-of-pocket Maximums – This is similar to coverage limits, only here the policy-holders payment obligation ends when they have reached the out-of-pocket limits. The maximums can be specified to a certain benefit (prescription drugs, for example) or to all the coverage obtained to a certain time period (usually a year).

There are also many plans that include a combination of the above and it would be prudent for anyone considering buying health insurance to look at ho they can benefit the most from the above mentioned plans. Planning your needs well could mean the difference between life and death.

Always look to maximize your accident and hospital coverage with premiums and choose an out-of-pocket maximum for small things such as doctor’s appointments and prescription drugs – thus decreasing your premium, while having adequate cover.

Never forget – the sooner you get health insurance, the sooner you can sleep easier knowing that you and your family are covered, no matter what happens. That is, as they say, peace of mind.
